Om Namah Sivaya.
Deivathin Kural # 79 of 03 Oct 2006.
1. These e-mails are translations of talks given by the erstwhile Pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, over more than sixty years, published by Vanady Padippagam, T.Nagar, Chennai, India, in ten volumes, in the Tamil language. On line version of this book in Tamil is available at 'www.kamakoti.org'. The english version is likely to be available very soon. These e-mails are simply an effort on the part of the sender, to share some of his bliss, as it is said, 'Yam perra peru peruga ivvaiyagam'. When he adds any personal observations he uses the phrase, 'KTSV adds'.
2. To-days chapter is from his lecture, titled, 'Vaiyagam Thuyar Theera Vazhi', ie., 'How to Remove The Worlds Problems', in pages 390 to 392, in Volume 1 of Deivathin Kural. Unless specifically mentioned, he or man includes, she or woman.
3. Past fifty years have seen many changes. In Science, Economics, Politics, and in the social sphere vast changes have taken place. ( It is good to remember that another six decades have passed by since Periyaval gave this talk, with further dramatic changes. However His talks are still perfectly applicable.) These changes are far exceeding what has happened in the last five thousand years. The experience of these five decades, that we have gone through, are huge. There is one lesson from all of them that, as Man moves farther and farther away from God and scriptures, he suffers more and more. Despite tremendous progress by all the disciplines of the Sciences, what prevails in all the countries, is a state of restlessness and tension. The balance is that the quiet, calm, peacefulness of the past seems to be gone forever. As human knowledge and physical capabilities has advanced, we seem to be inexhorably advancing the threat to the whole globe.
4. OK. That is the diagnosis. What is the treatment? 'Bhakthi and Santam', are the antidotes. Bhakthi means devotion, especially to God. Santam means imperturbable, calm, composure. As Bhakthi and Santam spreads in the world, there will be less and less need for, Police, Courts and Armies! This is the truth pointed out by our experience of the past five decades as related to the past five thousand years. So the job of Governments, is to spread Bakthi and Santam.
5. But what is the reality? Having declared themselves as Secular, they are turning a blind eye to this requirement, so that they may not be considered as not being Secular! (Readers may note that the dictionary meaning of the word secular includes, material, materialistic, profane, unsacred, worldly.) The requirement not to lean towards any one religion, should not mean that you ignore the need for devotion to God, and let the whole populace become irrelegious! Once in a while the politicians talk much about the need for moral and religious instructions. Then they form committees, organise meetings, tour various districts, and submit voluminous reports. Then period. If you check if anything was done in action, you will note that the report is gathering dust in the governmental archives! Because the Government has changed. It is a different party in power now! All actions in the name of culture and growth of culture is only a sham for 'drama and show'.
6. Whatever be the Government and however it may behave, it is the duty of responsible and knowledgeable citizens, to wish for the common man's well being and work towards that. Peoples well being will thrive only by love tewards God, the inseperable permanent relative of all of us. The past fifty years are clearly indicative of the fact that, decline in devotion to God, is concurrent with decline in our well being.
7. In every city, daily so many parties and associations are being formed. They all have differing, diverse aims. This leads to mutual distrust, bitterness and even conflicts. What we need is a forum, which can turn all this bitterness and distrust, into sweet co-operation. What we need is, 'Devotional Associations' not irrespective of religions, but, inclusive of all religions. Associations of Devotion are needed now and for ever. It is such associations which can bring cohesiveness, between disparate parties, in an amicable and peaceful manner.
8. So, we should form a Prayer Meeting or Association, in each of our contry's lacs of villages. We should unitedly endevour to bring this about, with God's help. By this process, we can reform ourselves, and bring the whole country together, on one platform of Love for all. By our country's example the whole world, could learn a lesson for peace. Our prayer to God, 'loakh samastha sukino bavanthu', (ie., 'let all people be happy,')which is the message of the Vedas, would resound in the whole world. We have to ensure this. We should devote our entire life to make this a reality.
9. Whatever the changes caused, by the advancement of science and technology, with the resultant universal problems of consumerism and over utilization of earth's resources, leading to conflicts at the global level, can all be resolved, by making this process of sincere prayers, a world wide phenomenon. This is what we should devote the balance days of our lives, with the motto, 'Nam kadan pani saidu kidappade!', meaning, 'our job is to serve'.
Sambhomahadeva.
